ABOUT HELLOPECIA
Hellopecia is an independent non-profit community-service initiative of Dermakraft- Integral Micropigmentation Co., supported generously by HairOPD and C.E.I.T, Pune, India.
We aims to build a congenial and receptive social environment for people suffering from Alopecia areata, Chemotherapy related hairloss and other such major hair-loss conditions. By working closely with other established groups working in same field, we hope to become the backbone of support for people with alopecia nationwide, across India.
What We Do
Extreme hair loss conditions like Alopecia areata totalis/ universalis may have emotional as well as social impact on person’s life. It is not uncommon for such people to become target of people’s curious glance and sometimes body shaming and name calling in public spaces. Hence it becomes important that community at large is made aware about various kind of serious hairloss conditions and also to build peer group based social support system for such people. The core vision behind Hellopecia is to help, support and advise anyone who experiences serious pathological hair loss causing a major distress.
Alopecia Support Group
A Support group; as the name itself suggests, is a gathering of people who share a common bond and come together on a regular basis to discuss their experiences and concerns.
Support groups are an essential part of our initiative. These meetings have a massive impact on an individual and their support network. Participants through mutual sharing, learn about how to live with alopecia and as well how to work on promoting their own positive well being. The official meetings take place at Dermakraft HQ, in Pune, which also lends its infrastructural and staff support towards successful conduct of these meetings.
Alopecia awareness
Alopecia awareness can guide those newly suffering from the condition. Also, providing friends and family of sufferers with helpful advice and information which will allow them to support
their dear ones. We intend to promote community awareness through organised events and also by crafting informative Literature/ Visuals / PSA / Social media content etc. Through our online web-portal we intend to constantly provide the patients with an up to date, accurate information on the current state of research in various alopecia conditions as well as any new treatments on horizon.
School support for Children
Although Alopecia Areata is not medically disabling, nor contagious, still it can be emotionally very challenging for young school going children.
Hence, one humble but most important activity of Hellopecia is to offer support to these children and their families by visiting their schools and making their classmates and teachers understand the condition through interactive awareness sessions. The more the classmates know about why the child has alopecia, the less likely they will be to tease or make fun of the child. We advocate with the concerned staff and principal to ease out any norms that may restrict the wearing of scarfs, caps etc on campus, for comfort of children suffering from any kind of alopecia.
Training and Capacity Building
Hellopecia in association with Centre of Excellence in Integral Trichology and ACADMiPi™ works towards the capacity building and training of medical and allied professionals on various alopecia conditions
and its treatment. Hellopecia intends to support the flow of knowledge about alopecia to the primary contact medical and allied professionals. Hellopecia intends to inculcate decent level of knowledge about Alopecia among the barbering professionals, so that the cases are referred at right time to physicians for suitable guidance and treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata is a medical condition in which the hairs fall out in round or oval patches. Hair can fall out from the scalp and elsewhere on the body. These patches can sometimes spread and combine further to involve larger areas, sometimes full scalp, involving eyebrows, beard and even the whole body. Alopecia areata can cause different types of hair loss:
Hair often grow back on its own in many cases but others may require adequate medical treatment. Sometimes the hair loss lasts for many years and in some cases they may not grow back at all. |
Is Alopecia Areata communicable?
Alopecia is not contagious. Nor is it caused by any worm, insect or fungus. It is an internal condition and one can NOT pick it up from others and NOR can get ‘infected’, even if living or playing in close proximity. In case of school children suffering from alopecia areata, they need not be forced to take off from school and nor do they or their friends require to take any special precautions in this regard. Not letting children play with their peers or not letting them attend classes due to alopecia can have a negative impact on their social well being. The best is to make aware the peers, parents and also the staff at school about the condition of the child. |
Is Alopecia areata harmful for general health?
This condition most often occurs in otherwise healthy people. It means that Alopecia Aerata as such doesn’t cause any ill effects on the rest of the body. Though in some cases it may be associated with other autoimmune diseases as well. Stress might be one of the precipitating factors in occurrence of Alopecia areata and it is always advisable to keep a check on stress levels during the treatments as well. |
How is Alopecia areata treated?
Single, slowly appearing, small patches of alopecia usually do not requirement treatment. Hair re-grow in a matter of few months. More number of patches or aggressively progressing alopecia requires aggressive approach in the treatment. The choice of treatment may depend upon various factors, and may include: Topical potent steroids, Intralesional steroid injections, Oral steroid regimen, PRP, bio photo-modulation, DPCP, Minoxidil etc. Caution: The information shared here is only for awareness purpose. Actual treatment regimen for any individual may vary from person to person, hence it is highly recommended to consult A qualified physician for any alopecia conditions. |
What are options other than medical treatment?
In cases that are resistant to medical treatment or those that relapse, the other options could be: Cosmetic camouflage with Hair systems/ Wigs and Scalp micro-pigmentation, Microblading brow restoration etc. These though are not a cure per se but help a lot by boosting the confidence of those who suffer more due to social impact of the alopecia condition. |
What is Cicatricial Alopecia ?
Cicatricial alopecia, also known as scarring alopecia is a group of alopecia conditions that cause permanent hair loss if not controlled well on time. These include DLE, LPP among some others. Due to the scarring in hair follicle, the hair can’t grow back. The hairloss usually happens in patches but can extend over larger areas on scalp thus causing a major psychological distress to the patients. Some of these conditions may be confused with alopecia areata, fungul infection of head etc. Hence a thorough evaluation by a qualified physician is required for proper diagnosis and hence treatment of the condition. |
Why do some cancer treatments cause hairloss?
Hair is lost when chemotherapy drugs damage hair follicles, making hair fall out. Different individual react to same treatment variably. Some drugs cause only the loss of head hair and others may cause hair loss over other parts of the body as well. Radiation therapy to the head often causes scalp hair loss.
